Title: Stop Pollution

Let me ask you a question. Name three ways the world could end. Did you think of a global apocalypse or an asteroid impact or a deadly virus? All of these are a scary thought but the chances of it happening are slim. However, there is one way that is happening right now and I’m going to be talking about today.

It can be in the ocean, the air and in a bin. It can kill sea animals and mammals too. It is in some birds stomachs and sea creatures as well and can also be sold for money. It can be found in big piles and in small piles. What is It? That’s right it’s man made pollution.

Big Idea 1
More than a million sea birds, mammals and sea creatures are killed each year by eating poisonous waste food and rubbish. Most mammals drink from lakes and ponds that have lots plastic and filth which harms and kills them. There are sea turtles that mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and die. Sea birds also mistake rubbish for fish and little sea turtles, so when they die and their feathers fade and you can see all the little rubbish in there stomach’s.

Big Idea 2
Most of the air pollution are caused by most factory’s. Those factory’s burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, natural gas and gasoline just to make electricity. It turns into smoke and then flows through the air and it tries to destroy oxygen, so when people breathe their inhaling toxic gas and get sick. More than 6.5 million people die each year from air pollution, and 1170 a year in New Zealand.

Big Idea 3
Do you really want more than 6.5 million people dying each year? Do you want more than 100,000 beautiful animals getting killed every day by pollution?  Well we can put an end to this by closing down some of the factories that causes air pollution and use renewable ways of making electricity. Wind farms, solar and geothermal energy are just a few ways to this. We can stop using plastic bags and start using reusable bags. Maybe it is time for supermarkets charge a lot of money for using plastic bags or maybe they can stop supplying them. That would definitely make a difference.  We can stop littering and never throw rubbish in the sea. We can start using the three R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle because it always helps.

Concluding Statement
So, as you can see that’s how much harm man made pollution causes to our precious planet. Don’t just think about the harm it's causing now, but think about our future as well. I challenge you here today to stop using plastic bags and think carefully about the rubbish that you are making. What kind of planet do you want our children to live on?  By  Ketula

Title  Basketball

What game uses a ball that you bounce and shoot at 2 hoops? Thats right it called Basketball. Basketball began in 1891 in Springfield Massachusetts when a Canadian PE teacher  called James Naismith invented it. This game from America has spread throughout the world.

Big Idea 1
Basketball started with eighteen men in a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts and has grown Into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide there are 10 rules in playing basketball. Do you know how much you get paid when you are in the NBA team? As of the 2016-2017 NBA season, the average salary for NBA players across all levels was over 5 million dollars.

Big Idea 2
Basketball is a two team game, where 7 players from each team play at one time and the whole team has 12 players all together. Its 40 minutes  game including 15 minutes of break. The game played on  rectangular floor called court and has hoop in each end. The ball moved down the court toward the basket by  passing and bouncing it on the floor.

Big Idea 3
My favourite basketball players are  LeBron James Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, James Harden. I like them because  they make 3 pointers and they do slam dunks. It's cool to do it.

Big idea 4
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and certainly one of North America’s big four sports. From high school basketball to the NBA, America loves its hoops.  Leagues and teams across Europe and Asia are growing, and some of the NBA’s biggest stars have come from overseas.

Concluding Statement
That is why I like basketball. I think you should have a go at playing it. By Ali

Title Is Minecraft Educational?
If you're wondering why my speech is about minecraft as an education tool, if you are one of the many other people who may be thinking there is no point to using minecraft in school to help learning, stay tuned. This speech is for you. Hi my name is Leo and I am here to talk to you about minecraft being an effective, interesting education tool.

Big Idea 1
Have you ever had trouble working out the perimeter or area of something? Well, minecraft could actually help you at that point. Here is how. You need to build structures and to do this you need to add blocks together.  As you add these block together you need to know or work out the perimeter and area. It makes this learning fun.

Big Idea 2
Microsoft and Mojang created an edition to minecraft called Minecraft Education Edition. Minecraft edu (for short) is a game completely controlled by the teacher. The teacher can create any kind of server they like, for example a tutorial world. This makes sure that all activities are about learning and all students are on task.
You may be wondering if there are limits to things you can do. There are some boundaries put in place that stop players going off course. You can also change in the settings menu so that the game is creative mode so players can not kill other players and focus on what they are meant to be doing.

Big Idea 3
I have been thinking about what minecraft actually does to children's brains. Minecraft gets kids brains running. It is creative and challenging. I play minecraft myself and I realised it’s not just about gaming and killing other people, it’s about learning about the game and having your brain active and growing.

Did you know, that every time you make a mistake, your brain grows and every time you learn something new, your brain grows? This is called a growth mindset. Minecraft is excellent for growing your brain.

Big Idea 4
Minecraft can be is an obsession for gamers, it leaves people in their rooms wasting their lives away playing this video game. According to recent research over one million people play minecraft everyday. How about that for an obsession?
I think if we use it in schools and teach people how to manage themselves when using this game this game would turn from being an obsession and into a learning game. By bring minecraft into the classroom we are actually helping millions of students.

Concluding Statement
So what do you think about minecraft being used in schools now? As I have shared with you already,  It helps students become creative and have a growth mindset. It is a great way to motivate students to learn about maths in a fun and practical way. I think minecraft should be taught in every school so go and tell your teacher or principal all about it.  By Leo

Title Fixed mindset  and Growth mindset
Let me ask you an easy question. How many muscles can you name in the human body? Did you think of a leg muscles like the calf? Or did you think of the muscles in the arm like the biceps? Did any of you think of the brain? Ok, it’s not really a muscle but it behaves like one!

Would you like your brain to keep growing and getting stronger every day just like other muscles when you exercise? But how are you going to do that? By turning your fixed mindset brain into a growth mindset brain that's how. With growth mindset you can do anything, because you won’t just say I give up when things get tough.

Have you ever said I can’t do this! I give up! It's too hard! I can't do maths! I am a bad speller! That's fixed mindset. A fixed mindset stops your brain from growing everyday because you never believe in yourself. A fixed mindset stops you from trying things that are challenging, it makes you give up and a fixed mindset stops you from saying I will learn from my friends. You can't learn or grow with fixed mindset.

But how do you change your fixed mindset into a growth mindset? How does that help you to learn? Did you know….. That making mistakes is okay. You maybe wondering why is okay to make mistake? It is actually very good for your brain as it grows whenever you make a single mistake. If you give effort to anything, you brain makes new connections. These connection are called synapses. They are how we learn new things. The more mistakes, the more connections you make and the stronger your brain becomes. Some people think that whenever they make mistakes they are not good at learning and they can never succeed in it if they make mistakes. But this is not true. It's a fixed mindset.

Some students believe that they are already intelligent and have talents which are excellent. It's good to think positively however they say that they don’t need to learn anymore in that subject because they already know it very well. This is another type of a fixed mindset. Thinking like this will not grow your brain. Let me give you an example. What if when you grow up go to the college and the teacher asks you a question about the subject you have always been very good at but you stopped trying to get better? You won't know the answer and the other students will. It’s because they didn’t stop themselves from learning more, they have a growth mindset, that's why they know the answer. Won't you be embarrassed that you were really good at it and now you didn't know a single answer that the other students did. It’s because you have a fixed mindset brain and they have a growth mindset brain.

Having a growth mindset means you will start to understand the importance of learning by making mistakes and keeping on trying even when it gets tough. Also it helps you in many things throughout life. Thomas Edison explained growth mindset perfectly when he said “I haven't failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” And now we have electric light in our homes. Wouldn't you like your brain getting stronger and growing everyday? It's time to change you mindset!  By Hadia
