Matariki 2016

Last week we celebrated Matariki (Maori New Year) at Owairaka. We learnt about the different ways Matariki is celebrated, read many Matariki myths, made stilts (a traditional Maori toy) and shared some delicious steamed pudding cooked in a hangi.  Here are a few photos.
Jordan, Vaughn and Charlotte cutting the stilts to size.

Kamal and Nate sharing our stilts with the school.

A big thank you to Mr Bennett for organising our fantastic week.

  1. Talofa room 21! I'm Katelynn from Mamaku 3 at Greymain school! I really like your stilts, they have really cool designs and I like that you all worked together to make them. Well done Jordan, Vaughn and Charlotte for cutting the stilts to size because if they both were different sizes you wouldn't be able to balance properly. You all look very proud of your stilts! Did you enjoy celebrating Matariki and listening to the myths and Legends? This reminds me of when Mamaku made a cloak to celebrate Matariki. It looked really cool when it was finished!
