Today we went to a BLAKE NZ-VR session to learn more about the threats to the oceans around NZ. During the session, we all got to wear a VR headset and experience what it would be like to dive in different parts of the Hauraki Gulf. Unfortunately many places around the Gulf have been overfished and are now very unhealthy.
We had a great discussion about what causes damage to our oceans and then about ways we can help protect the Hauraki Gulf. Our top idea is to make more marine reserves. Did you know that less than 1% of our marine environments are protected!
What ideas do you have to help stop overfishing and polluting the Hauraki Gulf?
I really like your idea of making more marine reserves - good thinking Room 8. The only other idea I had was banning fishing during certain months of the year, so marine life has a chance to live, breed and grow without being disturbed.
